2 nights/1day near Sapporo

Will be in Hokkaido during the end of December and have 2 nights/1 day free after 7 days of skiing. Can anyone suggest somewhere fun and interesting near Sapporo to spent this time. Was looking at Asahikawa or a nice onsen resort. All recommendations much appreciated
