driving between Sounkyo and Asahidake 2012/8/20 02:04
Hello,
We will be staying 2 nights in Sounkyo in September. I would be very interested to go and see the sulfurous vents and volcanic activity in Asahidake.
What is the driving distance ? How long will it take by car ?
It seems there is also a hiking trail. How long will that be and how difficult ?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

It takes slightly under two hours.

It is a full day hike (one way). Slower hikers will require two days.

Although the 2 places look quite near on the map, due to the terrain the drive requires a long detour. The drive from the cable car station in Sounkyo to that in Asahidake is about 2.5 hrs at a distance of 102 km.

If you are going in September, hopefully it is during the latter half of the month. By late September beautiful autumn foliage season starts in the Daisetsuzan National Park area. Besides Asahidake, try to include Ginsendai and Daisetsu Kogen. During peak season you may not be able to drive directly to Ginsendai and Daisetsu Kogen but rather have to park your car at a designated parking lot and take a shuttle.

Thank you very much for your answers.
I'll be in Sounkyo 12-14 september. Probably too soon for the leaves to turn red..

Mid September is not necessarily a bad time. With luck colour will start changing during your time of visit. The following are some reference websites in that region and you can keep monitoring some of them for the latest update on koyo.

Upon arriving in Sounkyo pay a visit to the Visitor Centre which is near the ropeway station. During the season they will post the latest koyo condition on a large board near the entrance. They will also provide the necessary transport information and English is spoken.
