Himeji Castle - still open and worth a visit?

Have seen from 2010 discussion on this forum about renovations- I am travelling in January 2012 and have been told not to bother about going there as everything is closed, is this accurate or can you still see parts of the castle and grounds? I would still be keen to go as Himeji is official sister-city to my hometown!
