I stayed with my family at Hyatt residential suite at Momochi (10 min walk from subway Nishijin station) several years ago and think it suitable for large groups. You can buy foods from supermarkets nearby and cook them in the room, can wash clothes etc. http://www.trs-fukuoka.co.jp/english/guide.html The name is changed to "The Residential Suites Fukuoka".

I park my students in the Toyoko Inn Eki Minami. It's not the closest to Hakata Station but if it's not raining, it's about a 10-15 minute walk. They have a free shuttle from Hakata Station to the hotel and back as well as a free morning shuttle to the airport if the weather is bad. The price there comes out just a bit above a place like J-Hoppers if you use twins (2 people to a room). Twins are about Y7000 per room or Y3500 per person. The good thing about this place is that singles are about Y4500, which are the cheapest for Toyoko Inns in Fukuoka. I've stayed there a dozen times, usually when I have an early flight out the next morning. http://www.toyoko-inn.com/e_hotel/00032/index.htmlI also like the Toyoko Inn Gion, which you can walk to under the street past the bicycle parking lots from Hakata Station. It's a little more expensive but is right next to the temple area to the east and Canal City a couple of blocks to the west. http://www.toyoko-inn.com/e_hotel/00017/If you have a better budget, the Hotel Centraza, which is just out the east exit of the station (50 meters) is a good choice. The taxi stands are visible from the entrance. It's on top of a convenience store and there's a choice of restaurants on the lower levels. A Starbuck's is next door. With the taxi stand so close, it's tempting to take one to wherever. http://www.centraza.com/
