Kanon 2015/3/11 09:15
Thank you, Kaoru san, for posting my picture of the statue of Kanon.
As I understand it, she is an angel in Buddhism, if angels are permitted.

Someone more knowledgeable about Kanon/Canon is invited to tell us more.

Re: Kannon 2015/3/11 12:48
Early on our stay in Japan, we were wandering in Kamakura, looking for the Dai Butsu we stumbled on a temple that held the Hase Kannon. This was our first introduction to this diety. We became quite fond of this Goddess of Mercy.

Originally called Guanyin or Guan Yin from China, this East Asian Buddhist diety is Known as Kannon in Japan. Not an Angel as such but a "Goddess".

A huge statue of Kannon is in Ofuna and can be seen from the train at the train station.

There is a quiet peacefulness about this diety, Invoking peace and forgiveness.

I picked up a small [5 inch] bronze statue in Kyoto and loved it as it is very crude and looks a thousand years old. it was very inexpensive.

So... Kannon is a Goddess. Canon is a camera. Sorry couldn't resist. Not to be confused with Canton, where they make Blue Willow.

Kanon = Canon 2015/3/11 23:00
I don't know if this is completely accurate, but I was told the goddess Kanon was the inspiration for the camera company's name, Canon.

Eric

I looked up the history of the Canon Camera Company. You are right!

The founder named the company after Kwannon, and had a great fondness to Kannon.

I didn't know. I am corrected.

Louann R, domo arigato for those old pictures of Yokohama and Yokosuka! :-)

I'm not sure people who remember Motomachi from the 1950's would recognize the place now looks like in 2015, especially with all the new buildings there.

Louann R, you're welcome. :-)

Personally, I'm not sure any US military personnel who lived in the Yokohama area in the 1950's would recognize the city itself--especially since the complete rebuilding of the port area with the Minato Mirai development from 1983 onward. The area that is Minato Mirai used to be a major shipyard owned by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and a major freight car classification yard for JGR (and after World War II, JNR).

Re: Yokohama Navy Exchange was where? 2015/3/24 12:28
Thanks for the photo link, Louann. We were stationed at the Embassy in Tokyo in the 70s, and would come down to Yokohama, eat at the cafeteria, shop at the exchange, and go home. I was 10 when we left, so I remember those buildings being a lot bigger than they look in the photos.

We would also go to Yokosuka or Yokota AFB to shop, and I still remember my parents buying $130 worth of groceries somewhere one time, which was probably a month or two worth of food for our family of 5.

James H., speaking of Base Exchanges, was your family at the time getting American groceries (e.g., the food you could buy in an American supermarket) at Yokosuka or Yokota? I wonder was it one of the few places you could buy a real turkey on Japanese soil during the holiday season (nowadays, you can get them at the Costco store in Kanagawa, a short drive from the Yokosuka naval base).
