Get an international driver's permint from your home country. It, in conjunction with your current driver's licence, will let you drive in Japan. All it really does is translate you livence into a number of foreign languages.
A word of caution - check to ensure that the car rental companies rent to people that do not have a Japanese licence, not all do. This is something my daughter ran into last month.
