Please have a look at: http://www.japanesespaces.com/album/ you will see a wood frame to keep the tatami together in a corner of a contemporary room.you could have a similar wood "frame" against the wall to or have a wider piece of flooring level with the tatami or raised a bit as the floor of the tokonoma is(you could use that flooring to support a tansu without damaging the tatami) Hope this help!
