Current state of seat availability:
December 6:
non-smoking: almost booked out
smoking: many seats available
green: many seats available
December 7:
entire train: many seats available
December 8:
entire train: many seats available
So, Tokyonet was right. You should have no problems making the reservations for the 8th tomorrow.
