Best friend 2023/11/20 21:43
My American best friend is fighting incurable illness. His family was lived in Honnmoku Yokohama city around 50s from 60s and he knows my dad well. He found me over 20 years ago after a very hard time. He never forgotten Yamate police station in Honnmoku where dad worked at the time and our last name. And I got a call the staff of Japan police headquarters talking about an American looking for us. I said my email adress for the staff member and our wonderful interaction began. These were sending daily emails, calling and exchanging very good gifts. I had an amazing plan to go to the central area of US where he lives. It's been over 20 years, but recently I haven't received any replies to my emails. I was deeply saddened to hear about his incurable illness from his wife. I am a Christian and believe in miracles by Jesus and pray get better every day for my best friend.

Time to look back: Yokohama Navy Exchange 2023/12/11 23:05
Kaoru-san
Saddened to hear about your dear friend in America. As time passes from years to decades, the past becomes clearer as we cherish those days when we could run faster, travel wider, make friends easier, feel deeper.
Speaking of which or whom, how is Steffi? I visited her father's grave two years ago in the foreign cemetery on the Bluff. So much history there. Many of my teachers at St. Joseph College are buried there along with friends and their relatives. Commodore Matthew Perry's sailors were the first to be buried at Gaijin-bochi in Yokohama.

Hello Honnmokujin,

Thank you for your posting. It's raining in Yokohama this morning, but it's not too cold. How is the weather in Washington DC? I recently renovated my house, so I will send the pictures to my American friend's wife, his son and you. Do you still have my email address on your computer? Sorry, I lost it when I replaced my computer. Please send me a message. I'm waiting for it.

Keep in touch,
Kaoru

Wondered if Eric, Steffi, Peter and others who have been regulars on this website are still checking this website. Watched the Superbowl last night and thought of Eric who lives in Missouri and maybe a Kansas City Chiefs fan. Certainly was an exciting game. Thought of Steffi who lives in the Berkshires and a fan of Seiji Ozawa, the Boston maestro and teacher at Tanglewood. He died recently. His wife attended St. Maur's in Yokohama.
Anyway, I wish you all a Happy New Year. The Chinese lunar calendar says it's the year of the dragon. I remember in Yokohama, jackets with images of dragons were quite popular back in the 1950s and '60s. Returning to Yokohama at cherry blossom time.

Staying in Yokohama 2024/2/22 14:54
Hi Honmokujin,

The Nikkei Stock Average is higher than the bubble economy of the 1980s. Tokyo/Yokohama area are warm and the cherry blossoms will soon be in full bloom. Write on this thread hotel name in Yokohama where you will be staying and the dates. I will go by car with my wife. Last time I couldn't go by Covid, this year is Okay. Never write your real name here I know about you.

Cheers

Sayonara cool cousin 2024/2/23 00:31
Hi everyone,

My cousin dad's sister's 2nd son, Tsutomu was passed away on Feb 19th at the age of 59 due to bile duct cancer. He had wedding with his lovely wife at Hotel New Ground about 20 years ago. Son is a 2nd year student at Yokohama Municipal Commercial High School. Tsutom's job mainly facility maintenance the Marine Tower and the passenger ship Hikawa Maru, a hospital ship during the Pacific War. I helped his wife as she was the chief mourner. His funeral was attended by many flowers and telegrams of condolence. Mr. Fujiki is one of them. He is the boss of Yokohama, and he retired the mayor who was trying to build a casino in Yokohama Port area MM21. And Tsutomu was enjoyed dinner with Ex PM Suga. My dad used to be a cop, he sometimes wore blouson jackets from the Fujiki group. Its company emblem is two pine branches.

Thank you for reading

I'm worried that the fighting in Gaza will escalate with the change of government. There may be attacks from Islamic extremists against it...

This is movie ending "Killing field". I think everyone knows this story.
And after that. It's tragic.

Hello....is anyone from our group still out there...Honmokujin, Kaouru-san, Peter, Eric, David? I hope everyone is fine. We had some medical challenges (food poisoning from some raw fish sushi, which landed me in hospital and caused bleeding, pain, and anemia...all now gone!) but aside from growing older, we are fine here in NY.
The Japanese Prime Minister is current!y visiting DC....so I thought of all of you! And Seiji Ozawa's death brought back so many memories of his years studying in Tanglewood, then leading the Boston Symphony for decades....
We have just given away our car! I am scared of our increasingly aggressive fellow NYC drivers. It is nice to take taxis instead...but still odd not to have a car at our disposal..... I have had one since 1962.
My very best to everyone out there...in Yokohama, New Hampshire, Missouri...

Just returned from Yokohama 2024/4/24 20:21
Hello, friends and former neighbors. I stayed in Yokohama for almost a month and viewed the cherry blossoms of Sankeien, the former Area One and Two, the Bluff, Nogeyama and Kamakura. Glad to read what Steffi wrote about giving up her car. No fun driving in New York City. And I wouldn't want to drive in Japan trying to maneuver those narrow streets. But what a bargain it is to visit Japan now at 153 yen to the dollar. Everything seemed so inexpensive. New skyscrapers in the Sakuragicho Minatomirai area. Fancy upscale neighborhoods in the Roppongi area in Tokyo with post-modern architecture.
Condolences to Kaoru-san's family. Yes, I know all about Yukio Fujiki, the boss of Yokohama Harbor and CEO of the Yokohama Bay Stars baseball team. I read his autobiography. He is a hero for stopping the casino project that was to be built in front of the Hotel New Grand.
I stayed at the New Otani Inn near Sakuragicho and the Oakwood Residence nearby. I recommend both highly.
