Take the JR Kyushu Shinkansen from Fukuoka (Hakata Station) to Shin-Yatsushiro Station (50 minutes, 6000 yen) and transfer to the B&S Miyazaki bus to Miyazaki (2 hours, 4500 yen). The entire one way trip takes just over three hours and costs around 10,000 yen. Online discount tickets called "B&S Miyazaki Net Kippu" are available for 7,500 yen. The bus portion is not covered by JR passes.
Take the JR Kyushu Shinkansen from Fukuoka (Hakata Station) to Kagoshima (Kagoshima-Chuo Station) and then the JR Kirishima limited express train to Miyazaki. The entire one way trip takes 3.5 to 4 hours, costs around 15,000 yen and is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass (except on Mizuho trains, which require a supplement fee) and the Kyushu Rail Pass.
Multiple bus companies operate frequent highway buses between Fukuoka (bus terminals at Hakata and Tenjin stations) and Miyazaki Station. The one way trip takes about 4.5 hours and costs 3500-7000 yen. Online reservations can be made via the Willer website.
JAL and Oriental Air Bridge (code-shared by ANA) operate multiple flights per day between Fukuoka Airport (5 minutes by subway from the city center) and Miyazaki Airport (10 minutes by train from the city center). Flight duration is 40 minutes. The regular one way fare is around 22,000 yen, however, discount tickets are usually available for between 6,000 and 14,000 yen.

Miyazaki City is located on the south eastern coast of Kyushu, and can be accessed by rail or air. The city is centered around Miyazaki Station which has convenient train connections to Miyazaki Airport. Most of the city's attractions, such as Miyazaki Shrine, the Prefectural and Science Museums, and the Seagaia Resort are located near the city center and are accessible by public transportation.
The city has an adequate bus network with Miyazaki Station as its hub. There is bus service to all the local attractions, and most are also within reasonable walking distance of a JR train station. Note however, that connections can be infrequent. For those who primarily use buses, a one day bus pass is available on weekends and holidays for 700 yen.
A rental car is not necessary to explore Miyazaki; however, it is convenient especially if traveling to attractions outside the city such as Udo Shrine. Rental outlets are located at the airport and around the city center.
