As Sendai's city center is located several kilometers inland, it is easy to forget that the city is actually a major port city. The Sendai port (åä`, Sendaikō) area serves as an important shipping hub for the Tohoku region and hosts many industrial warehouses and factories.
Besides the commercial hustle and bustle, the waterside location has recently been developed as a recreational area and now attracts locals and tourists with a nice aquarium, a beer factory and large shopping complexes, including an outlet mall.
Getting there and around
The closest train station to Sendai Port is Nakanosakae Station on the JR Senseki Line (20 minutes, 210 yen one way from Sendai Station, every 10 minutes). From Nakanosakae Station, it is a 15-30 minute walk to most of the port's attractions.
