pregnant wife - translating phrases 2013/4/2 20:16
We will be travelling to Japan in a few days and we recently discovered that my wife is pregnant. I would like some help translating some phrases in case we bump into someone not speaking English. It is mainly about food hygiene. Thanks a lot !

(1) my wife is pregnant: 妻が妊娠しました。 tsuma ga ninshin shimashita
Is this correct ?
(2) only well-cooked meat or fish please
(3) do not add any raw eggs please
(I read these are sometimes added to dishes, is that true ?)
(4) only non smoking seats please
(5) can you bring us to the hospital please

Appreciate your help !

Sorry double post.
I think it's good that you show a paper that's printed (1)-(4) to staff of restaurant at first and when you order.
They never think it's rude/impolite.

Maternity Mark 2013/4/2 22:49
Beingsafe,

You also might want to pick up a "Maternity Mark" at a train station in Japan for your wife to wear near her tummy or on her purse. This is a mark that is commonly used in Japan now to let people know you are pregnant. Just point the picture and say "This, please" in English or "kore kudasai" in Japanese.

We will try to pick one up. For long journeys we will reserve seats, but it would be good for shorter train rides or buses if she is feeling tired or sick. Thanks for the tip !
