UHT milk availability in Japan 2013/5/8 18:36
We will spend 2 weeks in Japan (Tokyo, Hakone, Lake Kawaguchi) with my 20-month-old daughter this month. We are curious if UHT milk is available in convenient stores like Family Mart or 7-11? If possible, could anybody please recommend me some, since all milk packages are written in Japanese, I believe?

FYI, UHT milk has a typical shelf life of six to nine months at room temperature (No need to be keep refrigerated)

Pasteurized milk needs to be refrigerated at all time and has a shelf like of 3-7 days.

UHT milk is not so common in Japan, may not be found convenience stores.
UHT milk can be kept for long time but once the package is opened, it cannot be kept long. Usually the package is at least one litre, if you're travelling around, I do not really see the advantage of buying UHT milk.
Ordinary milk is available from 200ml, followed by 500ml and 1000mil and all the convenience stores are carrying them.
Would it be far more convenient and safe to buy 200ml or 500ml during the 2 weeks?
Just my 2 cents.

@magonote

Thanks.

Why do I need UHT milk? My daughter drinks milk (250ml or about 8.4 oz) after her meals and before bed, so I don't need to go after convenience stores 4 times a day. I need milk that I can carry for the whole day, so I might buy 4 or 5 cartons of 250ml UHT milk in the morning and enjoy our trip for the whole day, if there is any.

FYI., my daughter drinks both UHT and pasteurized milk. She doesn't care much, but I do. ^_^

If there is no UHT milk in Japan (I read somewhere UHT milk is not common in Japan too), but pasteurized one (the one that need to keep cold at all time). I have 2 choices.

1. Go after convenience stores 4 times a day.

2. Bring cooler bag with me and store all cartons of milk in there. I personally think this is not a good idea since the temperature in cooler bag is not stable.

I recall that I once looked into this issue for someone else - I believe that UHT - ultra high temperature - heating method is more common.

Milk that is not treated UHT gets a special mention of "lower temperature treated" for those who go for the flavors.

Rather than repeating my whole answer here, please read my first post:

If you see not the regular milk carton package but a smaller package with more sturdy material (alunimum lined) with a straw attached, that is normally the "long life" milk, which can be carried around in room temperature.

@AK Thank you for the link.

"If you see not the regular milk carton package but a smaller package with more sturdy material (alunimum lined) with a straw attached, that is normally the "long life" milk, which can be carried around in room temperature."

Especially, the above. It helps me a lot.

So UHT milk is available there.

If you don't mind, Is it available in convenience stores like Lawson, 7-11, or FamilyMart? if it is not, where could I find one?

Thanks,
Mike

My advice, if she drinks any kind of milk. I don't see why you'd wanna lug around a litre of milk with you. You don't bring litres of juice with you all day long for yourself do you? There's Family Marts, 7-11 everywhere. not to mention the vending machines.

magonote is incorrect. UHT is the most common kind of milk in Japan.

in fact it is difficult to find non-UHT milk in Japan.

@winterwolf

Sorry, I mixed up the term for the pasturiztion. I meant so-called 'Long Life Milk' in Japan by the term UHT Milk.

At a convenience store near where I live, unfortunately there was none.

At AEON supermarket nearby, I found this one:
http://catalog-p.meiji.co.jp/products/dairies/milk_drink/020104/490270...

and their private label brand "Top Valu":

(processed milk)
http://www.topvalu.net/items/detail.php?id=1274&sid=1&cid=76&mid=74
(full milk)

All of them say 常温保存可能品 (product that can be stored at normal/room temperature).

There were others that said "ESL," extended shelf life, but those they said needed to be kept at 10 degrees C or lower.

There are not enough words to thank you everybody for helpful info.

But again thank you all.

Ps. We are in Tokyo right now, as of May 21, 2013, enjoying our trip. ^_^
