Meaning and etymology of Niigata 2013/6/7 18:21
Hi all,

Does anyone have any historical references on the meaning of the name of Niigata-ken (prefecture) and/or Niigata-shi (city)?

Have lived in Niigata before and have tried searching for some answers but couldn't find much in English, I suspect that the most relevant material on this would be in Japanese or behind Japanese sites but don't even know where to start.

Thanks in advance for your help.

新潟 Niigata
新 nii: new
潟 gata (kata): lagoon

It came from the lagoon newly built by two rivers, 信濃川 (Shinanogawa/Shinano river)and 阿賀野川 (Aganogawa/Agano river).
