Tattoo: free your mind

I want to know how you say 'free your mind' in Japanese because I want to get a tattoo with that.

Literal translation are not easy as many common expressions, sayings etc. used in English aren't necessarily used in other languages.
If they are used they often sound strange.

At Ted Kennedy funeral, because he loved the French language, someone said "au revoir grand fromage" unfortunately in French a big cheese is just a cheese, not an important person at all!

It is even more complicated in Japanese because of the kanji.

My Japanese buddy says that this means "empty head"...hope he is kidding

You mean "Free your mind" as in "Free your mind and think?"

Here is the translation:
あなたの心を解放する
Anata no kokoro wo kaihou suru

Which literally means: "Release your mind/get open minded/ emancipate yourself"

The key word here is the kanji 解放 (kaihou), which means "release", "liberation", "emancipation"

あなたの心を解放する is an statement and not imperative, and too literal translation, I'm afraid.

心を解き放て might sound closer to what OP meant, but still, I really do not recommend to use it for your tattoo - without knowing the implication and nuance, people tend to end up in something very strange or funny, far from the original intention.

And you should ask the artist that really knows Japanese writing.

By the way, there is 心頭滅却(ShinTouMekkyaku) in zen words.
Although I think 心を解き放て that a_cup_of_tea said is the best in this answers now.
And (あなたの)心を解放せよ is imperative of rora's said one.

I want to know what that exactly means.

心に自由を sounds very nice.
It means "Set your mind free", "Keep your heart free" or something.

心(kokoro; herat, mind)
に(ni; in, at)
自由(jiyuu; freedom, liberty)
を(wo)

Interesting that noone mentions fonts.

By the way, 頭空っぽ is definitely "free your mind." That's what you get when you ask for translations without providing context ;)
