Do we need a JR Pass? 2013/8/15 06:26
Hi There!

We are planning a trip in November (1st time) and I've seen some itineraries similar to ours posted on sites and I've seen replies to them that they do not need a JR pass. Can anyone please provide feedback as there is just so much information to process on how to get around Japan.

Thanks in advance!

Day 1: Arrival Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo sightsee. Overnight Tokyo.
Day 3: Overnight Tokyo (day trio to Nikko).
Day 4: Tokyo to Lake Kawaguchiko. Overnight Lake Kawaguchiko.
Day 5: Travel from Lake Kawaguchiko to Kyoto. Overnight Kyoto.
Day 6: Kyoto (Kyoto Sightsee)
Day 7: Kyoto (Himeji Castle)
Day 8: Kyoto (Nara + Osaka)
Day 9: Kyoto to Shirakawa Go. Overnight Shirakawa-Go
Day 10: Visit Yayamata . Overnight Matsumoto (Matsumoto Castle)
Day 11: Overnight Matsumoto (Magome-Tsumago trail)
Day 12: Matsumoto to Tokyo. Overnight in Tokyo
Day 13: Depart Tokyo

The following are the fares that would be covered by using a Japan Rail Pass:

Day 1: Arrival Tokyo

Typically 1000-2000 yen

Day 2: Tokyo sightsee. Overnight Tokyo.

Typically 0-500 yen

Day 3: Overnight Tokyo (day trio to Nikko).

Typically 3,000 yen

Day 4: Tokyo to Lake Kawaguchiko. Overnight Lake Kawaguchiko.

About 1000 yen

Day 5: Travel from Lake Kawaguchiko to Kyoto. Overnight Kyoto.

About 11,000 yen

Day 6: Kyoto (Kyoto Sightsee)

Typically 0-200 yen

Day 7: Kyoto (Himeji Castle)

2,000 yen
(note that the castle is still under renovation until spring 2015)

Day 8: Kyoto (Nara + Osaka)

About 2000 yen

Day 9: Kyoto to Shirakawa Go. Overnight Shirakawa-Go

7,000 yen (Kyoto-Kanazawa)

Day 10: Visit Yayamata . Overnight Matsumoto (Matsumoto Castle)

I assume you mean Takayama.
No savings with the Japan Rail Pass

Day 11: Overnight Matsumoto (Magome-Tsumago trail)

About 10,000 yen

Day 12: Matsumoto to Tokyo. Overnight in Tokyo

About 6,000 yen

Day 13: Depart Tokyo

Typically 1000-3000 yen

I hope this will enable you to nake the comparison to the cost of a 7-day or 14-day Japan Rail Pass.

If you have a google chrome, go to map then type in point A( hotel, train station, etc. ) to point B they will tell you how to get there plus how much it is.
