Panasonic P900iV mobile phone in UK?
|
2004/10/19 07:45

|
I've been really keen on the Panasonic P900iV mobile phone, and have even found somewhere to buy it from.
But before i spend the £160+ on this tasty phone, i need to be sure that this phone will work in the UK (On the 3 network i would assume).
The phone is on the NTT DoCoMo FOMA network in japan.

No, it won't because FOMA is an older version of UMTS network.
One point to add is that Japanese handsets are firmly SIM locked i.e. P900iV works only with DoCoMo SIM.

Dear friends of Japan Forum, I need to know if the Panasonic telephone p900iv can work in South America.
I am of Buenos Aires - Argentina and this telephone return to me really crazy but I cannot invest so much in which I do not know if it will work to me. Las bandas en que trabajan las compañías aquí son las convencionales 800, 1800 y 1900 MHZ, además de GSM y TDMA.

hi!, i'm new here, and i'm from mexico, i really want that mobile too, but as they said, it will not work outside japan, but i was wondering, if in some time, maybe the mobile will be avilable for latin america, i mean, that will work here...
another doubt, i am planning an exchange for this year, but still don't know where i am going, my second option is japan, but they still don't tell me, so, if i end up going to japan, and buy the mobile, and after a year i bring it with me to mexico, will it work? i know it's not possible, but let me believe jeje

FOMA is old..then what is new with DoCoMo in regards to 3G. Another question is there are two types of 3G service offered in Japan, one built up on the old network and one on a new network..how do they work.... and why do ppl who have 3g phones sometimes need to get a PDC phones in certain regions...

FOMA is old..then what is new with DoCoMo in regards to 3G.
FOMA is, at least from ordinary users' viewpoint, not old at all. It's DoCoMo's only and current 3G service.
Another question is there are two types of 3G service offered in Japan, one built up on the old network and one on a new network..how do they work....
Technically, FOMA was deployed very early and is based on a slightly earlier version of 3G W-CDMA network. So foreign W-CDMA phones (such as Nokia 6650/7600) show bad reception in FOMA network. However it has nothing to do with most FOMA users.
Vodafone Japan's 3G is based on worldwide standard W-CDMA network.
and why do ppl who have 3g phones sometimes need to get a PDC phones in certain regions...
Because 3G coverage is still smaller than PDC coverage in rural areas, though it has been improved rapidly.

You should not think FOMA phones similarly to GSM phones.
- You can't use FOMA phones (except N900iG) outside of Japan.
- You can't buy FOMA phones outside of Japan.
- You can't buy FOMA phones without subscription.
