The High School Tournament is quite popular (the semi finals and final are played at National Stadium every year at the end of December and Jan 1 and they are broadcasted live by TV), but the University Tournaments are very low profile; -is not like in USA where the college league in many sports are the big deal- in Japan is not like that at all.

University football league is divided into 9 regional league(Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, kitashinetsu, Tokai, Kansai, chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu) and more than 400 teams, 15,000 footballers belong under Japan University Football Association(JUFA).
I think non of university soccer league is popular but Kanto(include Tokyo) league is relatively popular than the others because of population.

also Japan University Women Football Association(JUWFA) has 9 regional league with 73 teams, 1468 footballers in 2011.

Each 47 prefectures, Hokkaido to Okinawa, organize it's own soccer tournament every year. The winning team of the tournament is automatically qualified into Emperor's cup tournament(J1 and J2 soccer teams are automatically selected).
It's sometimes the winning team belongs to Japan Football League(the third division), or a University team, a private soccer club, or even a high school team.
There are 13 university teams and 4 high school teams compete in the 93rd emperor's cup(2013).

To Tokyo Friend: do you know a website to look about these University Leagues? and
Do they play a national cup tournament? -between the winners of each league- at the end of year (like the High School teams).

How is the infrastructure in Japanese Universities compared to the ncaa division 1 american universities? I have watched some youtube videos and it seems that some universities in Japan have a really good field for playing sports
