Where to buy chochin/paper lantern in tokyo 2014/10/25 23:06
Hi!

we're travelling through japan for 3weeks and we would really like to buy some of those awesome red paper lanters you see at Izakaya and other food/drink places... But, we haven't found any shops selling the bigger and better quality ones. A thread from 2012 on this forum showed an adress in kyoto, but we're not visiting there anymore. Does anybody know where to buy/order these cool souvenirs in Tokyo..?
Thank you!

You can buy Chochin in Asakusa.
The red chochin you have seen in Izakaya is made of plastic to prevent rain damage. Real chochin is made of paper.

Thank you! I've also seen paper chochin covered in plastic.
I assume by asakusa you mean nakamise dori or kappabashi dori?
Thank for the tips

You can buy souvenir type of Chochin in Asakusa Nakamise-dori shopping street, such shop name "Hirano-Ya", "Hirao" and "Warabiya".
Chochin for commercial use is normally made by order and the price is quite expensive.
Kikyo-Ya in Kappabashi sells commercial chochin.
