Department Food Court 2014/11/11 20:04
If you buy takeaway from the food court in a department store, is there a place for you to sit and eat? Or you have to find some other place like a park or a bench outside?

Department store food floors generally sell food for you to take home, so they don't provide places to sit. They have a few stalls with seats, but these are just mini-restaurants where you can order the food from that particular stall only.

How about cafeterias? Do they have cafeterias in shopping malls?

The department store food court sell delicatessen food for home lunch/dinner base.
It bad manners to eat them in the store.
You can take it to your accommodation or park to eat if they are lunch, bento box type food.

Some food court provide cafeteria inside but you can't eat delicatessen food there.

Most if not all department stores have rooftops where you can rest and you can bring any food there to eat. Press R on the elevator to get there.

Also note that, in Japanese language, "depa-chika" and "food court" are two different things. The former is the basement floor of department stores where you generally buy food to take out. The latter is a wide space inside a mall. Food stalls surround tables and chairs, and you generally buy fast food to eat there.

Most department stores don't have what we call "food court" in Japanese. So again, you can buy food in depa-chika and take it to its rooftop. And if you want to eat take away food or your lunch from home at malls, you can sit on one of the outdoor benches.

Many dept stores do have a collection of restaurants on their top floor(s), though, which can be a good place to find a decent variety of food.
