Overnight Tokyo to Sapporo with JR Pass?

Hi there,
I'm keen to travel from Tokyo to Sapporo with the JR pass. As distance is quite far, what's the best way to do it? Is overnight train a good option as it'll save me some time? Or it doesn't really work as there are many connections in between?
What would you recommend?
Many thanks.

Mr. Uji's reply daytime train was what exactly we did last feb 7 to 14' 2015. I think it is the best and fastest way to sapporo.

You can try this possibility, but there's a chance you won't find seat.
You can take the Shinenshin from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori at around 18:00, transfer to Aomori and take the Hamanasu night train from Aomori to Sapporo.

Depending on if you've seen the area before riding it in the day time can be enjoyable. I really enjoyed the sights along the way when I travelled that route; I didn't find it a waste of time at all!
