does seem strange none of the chains i use have rooms either, there must be a big event on that night.

Tong Vfang Xien Qi(or Tohoshinki) concerts are held on the 20, 21 and 22 of Feb in Nagoya Dome.
The most budget hotels are fully booked by the Dec 2014.
But, there are plenty hotels in Nagoya, it unable to reserve all rooms by Tohoshinki fans. It may be some other small concerts will be held on the day.
