Should I buy a Japan Rail Pass 2015/2/5 18:15
Hi,

I am traveling the following:

Day 1: Airport to Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo
Day 4: Tokyo to Kyoto
Day 5: Kyoto
Day 6: Kyoto
Day 7: Kyoto to Nara / Nara to Kyoto
Day 7: Kyoto to Osaka
Day 8: Osaka to Airport

Is it worthwhile to buy a 7 day japan rail pass or just individual tickets?

Thanks

How much does the pass cost? http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361.html

And how much do individual tickets cost? http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2323.html

It is better buy individual ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto.
But If you would like to go other destinations for example from Kyoto to Himeji, Hiroshima by day trip, It is better buy JR Rail Pass as more flexible.

The most expensive part is Tokyo-Kyoto so unless you also say go to Hiroshima and back and one more area like Himeji, 7 day JR Pass in this case is NOT worth it.

Load up a Sucia card in Tokyo to use Local lines. You can also use Sucia in Osaka as well. Then single regular ticket on Tokyo-Kyoto Shinkansen and bonus would be you can buy the more frequent Nozomi trains

Hope this helps!!

Have Fun!!

While the JR pass is one of the best things for travelling in Japan, for your schedule it would not provide a saving.

A seven day pass is Y29,110 and your schedule covers eight days, so going to a 14-day pass is less likely to help.

Individual tickets should be about Y20,000 total, so a 1/3rd less than a train pass.
- Narita to Tokyo on the N'Ex is Y1500 (until 13th March, then it is back to Y3,020)
- Tokyo trains you might consider a day pass, but maybe Y1,000/day max.
- Tokyo to Kyoto is Y13,080 (unreserved seat) or Y13,600 (reserved seat)
- Nara return is Y1,420
- Kyoto subway trains are local, so the JR pass does not apply - plus you might use buses or some of the other local trains.
- Kyoto to Osaka Y560
- Osaka to Kansai Y1,190 (JR Kansai airport rapid)

It's impoossible to answer without knowing which airports we ate talking about. All the answers above make assumptions which may or may not hold.
