Flexible 4 Days pass question

Coming to Sapporo for 1 week but I won't be travelling outside of Sapporo everyday.
I'm planning to get the Flexible 4 Days to use on the longer trips.
When I arrive in Sapporo I don't want to use the JR pass but I do want to make a reservation asap to travel to Kushiro (in 3 days time).
I haven't used a flexible pass before. So I don't know if I can exchange the pass and use it another day.
If it's not possible, then I'll exchange it on the day I want to use the JR pass.

The JR Hokkaido website says only that reservations can be made after the pass is exchanged, so I suppose this applies to the flexible pass as well.
