We are 14 in the group traveling to Osaka on April 30 2015. On May 3, we want to take a train from Osaka to Nagoya. Can we make an advance reservation/purchase of tickets on line?

Yes, if you read Japanese and will be paying forthe tickets (i.e., not using JR Passes). Just book on any JR-group company's website.

I am under the impression that online ticket bookings can only be done with Japanese credit cards, and only for JR East trains. Just make your reservations when you arrive in Japan.
