I arrive at Narita intl airport. I need to get to tokyo for 1 night then get shinkansen to Nargano. What rail pass will cover both types of travel
Also will trains run on news years day

I don't think there is any pass worth getting. Just pay using single tickets.

Do you need to get to Tokyo, or could you stay at Narita (one of the airport hotels). There are a couple of options if you wanted to avoid the expense of a Tokyo hotel.
