Are you departing from Tokyo?
If you are, there will be direct shinkansen from Tokyo to Kanazawa starting middle of next month :

If you know the layout of the station, you can do it in 4 minutes. You have to be quick and be ready to leave as soon as the door opens. Maibara Ltd. Exp. lines are perpendicular and under the Shinkansen lines.

As @. says you should be fine if you are ready to go when the train stops and know which platform you are heading for. Maibara station is not large & this is a common connection. http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/station/_img/maibara_L.jpg

I think it is a little difficult for someone who hasn't done this transfer before in that time gap. However, it can be done in a pinch.

It might be hard, but at the same time, doable, I think.

Hyperdia does not show this connection meaning it does not recommend you to do this transfer.

Hyperdia sometimes show transfer within one minute, in other situation, so they probably think it to be difficult.

Below is the map of Maibara station.

https://www.jr-odekake.net/eki/premises.php?id=0610147

You must go up, go through Shinkansen gate and then go down to the platform for Kanazawa.

Below is a movie of the transfer at Maibara, from Shinkansen to limited express train to Kanazawa.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTBgVSlnL4w

As you see it takes about 4 min, but if you go to an appropriate place in Shinkansen to go up the stairs, you might be able to reach the Shinkansen gate first, and you might be able to go to the platform within 2 min or so.

Good luck!

Can you not take earlier trains? According to Hyperdia.com, connection between Shinkansen to Limited Express is 7 minutes:-

08:33 KYOTO – MAIBARA 08:52 SHINKANSEN HIKARI 512
08:59 MAIBARA – KANAZAWA 10:49 LTD. EXP SHIRASAGI 1

Alternatively

08:59 KYOTO – MAIBARA 09:19 SHINKANSEN KODAMA 642
09:56 MAIBARA – KANAZAWA 11:48 LTD. EXP SHIRASAGI 3

Re: train transfer 2015/2/25 14:41
As far as I understand, you will arrive at platform no 12 (the Youtube video shows platform no 11 bound for Shin-Osaka). Then you go upstairs and then downstairs (as judged from the station map), go straight to the shinkansen-non-shinkansen transfer gate, and then go down to platform 5/6.

One thing to add, you should ask Kyoto station attendant where is the stairs at Maibara: where should you get off (the car number of the Hikari, that is.).

Re: train transfer 2015/2/25 14:59
One more thing:

Tokaido shinkansen is operated by JR Tokai while Hokuriku line from Maibara to Kanazawa is operated by JR-West, so even if your Hikari (JR Tokai) is delayed, Shirasagi (JR-West) will not wait for you. You must do your transfer at your own risk. You may need to wait for next Shirasagi, one hour later.

Re: train transfer 2015/2/25 21:00
As far as I know Shinkansen trains does not start early or reach early. As for delay, they rarely do, but in some instances they might delay.

You can see the train situation through JR-Tokai's English website.

http://english.jr-central.co.jp/index.html

In the top center, you will find Tokaido Shinkansen:
and open circle denotes there is no delay. No delay means there is less than 1 min delay, I suppose. You should check this website before starting your trip.

Re: train transfer 2015/2/26 05:41
Hir,

Thank you for the correction.

Information on train delays shall be posted when delays of 30 minutes or more have occurred on the Tokaido Shinkansen or JR Central conventional lines.

On the other hand, I tried to find the data for 定時運航率, that is the ratio of on time operation of trains, but can not find reliable source. Some unofficial web pages show it is 95% (within 1 min of delay), but I am not sure.

is it common that shinkansen late or depart early?

I have used shinkansen countless times, and never experienced one that departed earlier than scheduled. However, I have experienced both late on arrival as well as delay on departure .
