Indoor Slippers 2015/3/3 23:23
Hello,

We are traveling for the first time to Japan in November 2015.

I've seen that you have to take your shoes of in cetrain restaurants and in Temples and Shrines and some hotels.

Would it be allowed to bring our own slippers/slides and use those instead of the ones that are provided?
like these:

Because my husband has wide feet and a large size (for Japanese) we were wondering if this would be an option that would be allowed.
If we get slippers here in a hotel or at a spa then they are always to smal and he can't walk on them.

Thank you so much for your answers

You can bring your own slippers/room shoes but it must have a toe part.

The picture you have shown has no toe part. Thus, it called "sandal" in JP. A pair of sandal can be used in garden, walking neighborhood, cleaning, something casual use in JP. Therefore, people in Hotels, Temples and Shrines misunderstand that you wore a pair of sandal inside which has soft sole outside.
You can wear this type of slipper inside.

or, you can wear a pair of hiking/mountain socks which is made by quite thick material and don't feel coldness in winter season inside. You can buy it at mountain gear/equipment shops. It has a toe part too.

Barefoot walking inside house, temple, or shrine is very very rude manner in JP(even outside other than beach). You must wear a pair of socks or slipper/room shoes where a pair of outside shoes is not permitted to wear.

Do not walk on Tatami mat with a pair of slipper/room shoes. You must take off as you walk on Tatami. A pair of socks can be walked on Tatami.

a pair of sandal inside which has soft sole outside → a pair of sandal inside which has hard sole outside.
