Is JR pass worth for my itinerary? 2015/3/22 23:38
Hi, I am planning to travel to Kyoto in November with the following itinerary:

D1 Kansai Airport ~ Kyoto ~ Nara
D2 Kyoto
D3 Kyoto ~ Takao
D4 Kyoto ~ Koyasan
D5 Koyasan ~ Takayama
D6 Takayama ~ Shirakawa-go ~ Takayama
D7 Takayama ~ Osaka
D8 Osaka
D9 Osaka ~ Kansai Airport

Need advice from all the expert:
1. Is is worth to get the 7 days JR pass for the above itineraries?
2. What's the most convenient and economical way of transportation?

I have done some study on the transportation but still confused and really hopes someone could enlightened me?

Thanks.

Hi Jefferene,

Your travel does not need a 7 day JR Pass. Too expensive, would not pay off. You might want to consider the new JR Kansai Pass for your trip. Would cover everywhere you want to go and for a better price.

Having the JR Pass does make it easier to travel around.

D1 Kansai Airport ~ Kyoto ~ Nara Kansai Airport to Kyoto Limited Express Haruka 3370yen
Kyoto to Nara to Kyoto 1420yen

D2 Kyoto

D3 Kyoto ~ Takao Only guessing here....Kyoto to Tsukigaseguchi to Kyoto 1940yen plus bus

D4 Kyoto ~ Koyasan Kyoto to Shinimamiya 2090yen and then private lines

D5 Koyasan ~ Takayama Private lines to Shinimamiya and then Takayama 10600yen

D6 Takayama ~ Shirakawa-go ~ Takayama Nohi Bus

D7 Takayama ~ Osaka Takayama to Osaka 10600yen

D8 Osaka Use IC cards

D9 Osaka ~ Kansai Airport

In this scenario:
Total 27930yen+
7 Day Rail Pass 29110Yen

Conclusion: No the JR Rail pass would not help in this case.

I would get a ICOCA card at Kansai Airport and load up as you go to be used for travel within Osaka, Kyoto, Nara. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2359_003.html, this way you can use by private and JR lines as you go.

Buy this pass from Shin-Imamiya http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2358_012.html to go to Koyasan and back.

Then reserve the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Nagoya and also reserve the Limited express to Takayama and back at JR Shin-Osaka station or Osaka station.

Once you get to Takayama go to Nohi bus center right away to reserve the bus to Shirakawa-go http://www.nouhibus.co.jp/english/shirakawago_kanazawa.html

Hope this helps!!!
Have fun!!!
