Is the following possible and make sense? Or there are other ways?
Shinagawa to Takayama; reach hotel around 14:30, city tour of Takayama (suggestion welcome), next day catch early morning train from Takayama to Hiroshima.
All these mainly for a view from the Nagoya-Takayama portion of train journey using LTD. EXP (WIDE VIEW) HIDA and a taste of Takayama.

The trip from Nagoya to Takayama by the wideview is my favourite train trip (though enoshima to Kamakura by the electric rail is fun too). If you can, get up into the reserved seats where you can see out past the driver in the front. Don't be surprised when you start by going backwards, though.
It is feasible to get the flavour of Takayama in an afternoon and an overnight stay is great (I've spent over a week there, but I'm lazy). The trip back to Nagoya isn't as nice as the trip to Takayama
