Self drive Chubu to Kansai

Planning a self drive trip from Nagoya - Takayama - Shirakawago - Toyama - Kanazawa - Kyoto - Osaka

Is the route possible?

Yes, all these cities are connected each other with roads around the year, and distances are manageable.

But I recommend to drop off the car in Kyoto and use public transportation in Kyoto and Osaka. Sightseeing with a car in Kyoto is not convenient due to lack of parking at many sights.

Also if you have never driven in winter conditions, I don't recommend to drive during the winter months. Especially the area around Shirakawago gets lots of snow.

The order seems well chosen. I recommend to allocate a minimum of four days from departure from Nagoya to arrival in Kyoto.

Would it be better to drive from Kanazawa to Osaka?

The drive from Kanazawa to Osaka leads via Kyoto. So, if you wish to see Kyoto, I recommend to go there first.
