We are travelling to Hakuba in January to ski for 7 days then a break of two days before travelling to Myoko for another 7 days skiing. Wanted to do something traditional and touristy in-between the two ski trips. Is it possible to go to Kanazawa by train or even a guided tour? I was hoping to drive however have been told it could be quite dangerous.

Take the Oito Line from Hakuba to Itoigawa (one transfer along the way in Mianami-Otari) and then the shinkansen to Kanazawa (just over two hours with a good connection - but be warned that good connections are rare). Afterwards, take the shinkansen from Kanazawa to Joetsu-Myoko and a local train to Myoko Kogen (about two hours with a good connection): http://www.hyperdia.com/
