I was on the island the month after and rebuilding had already started, Also its the least impressive, you need to work up the mountain a little….go its worth it, allow 4-6 hours to explore at a good speed

I went to the site recommended by Eileen and it looks like part of the Itsukushima shrine is still closed, and the ropeway/cable car will be closed until March 18.
Does anyone have any view on how much this might affect a trip to Miyajima?
Thanks in advance

I am not sure how the construction site looks, but I heard that most of the shrine can still be visited and is still nice.
As for the ropeway, if you are in a good shape, you can walk up there in about one hour. I will do it when I go there in a few weeks time. Even if the ropeway were working, I would walk.
If you don't like to hike, you can also walk up halfway or so. It is still nice. There are about three different routes. One is very steep, direct and goes through the forest. It is the hardest. I find the two others (I think they meet each other half way up) more scenic and easier to walk. A map is available at the ferry terminal.

Miyajima History and Folklore Museum

My wife and I just visited Miyajima this morning (3/25) and we had a wonderful time. There is a little construction at the Itsukushima shrine, but it certainly did not detract much from our visit. I highly recommend catching the shrine at high tide. We saw it at high tide, then later at low tide and it is prettier with the water. The best thing we saw though, was the Folklore museum. This was a surprise to us, we found it by walking around (though it is on the site mentioned above), and it is really nice. http://www.hiroshima-cdas.or.jp/miyajima/english/kanko_to/minzoku/minzoku1.htm¥300 (adults) gets one into the Museum (same as the shrine, btw). Beautiful garden and building with lots of old artifacts.

We would like to visit Hiroshima and Miyajima on a day trip from Himeji. Where it is better to start sightseeing in order to see shrine in Miyajima in high tide? Thanks in advance.

I personnally find December through March a little bit less appealing because of the vegetation, that is more beautiful during spring, summer and autumn. But even in winter, Miyajima is nice to be visited.

Having just been there myself I would strongly recommend not going in summer. It was far too hot and humid to be as enjoyable as it could be in milder weather.
