Will our iphones work in Japan

Hello
We are going out to Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakuba in January 2016. I have heard that mobile phones may not work in Japan. Is this true even of modern iphones. Our phones are registered in England and we are coming from London. If there is going to be a problem with the phones, what solution do you recommend?

I've used 3 different iPhones in Japan, though I don't use the cellular portion of them. I rent a pocket wifi and use my phone solely in airplane mode. I rent from GlobalAdvancedComm and they have been excellent.
