I'm keen to know what will be "in season" in May? We'll be in Tokyo, Matsumoto, Takayama, Kyoto, and Hiroshima.
So tell me what I shouldn't miss whilst in these areas in May!

Nalice - thanks for those links and good tip about the izakaya. I've only been there in September (twice) in this area. I ate at Minshuku, Ryokan, and mountain huts (Sanso), and bought fruit that was in season - mainly apples and grapes, but a few other things. I'm not sure if any of the seafood or other foods I had were seasonal specialities. I try anything new - so last time - natto, horse, bee larvae, all types of seafood, and (it seems) most parts of chickens and pigs.
Uco - I was hoping the mountain vegetables would be coming on, so will make sure I get some, and will keep an eye out for the bamboo shoots. Thanks
I was also hoping cherries would be starting, but I may be too early.

I found an illustrated website of seasonal foods in May. This is for fruits. The three tropical fruits on the 3rd row are not commonly available in Japan, but I supposed you can find cherries in various part of the country, and it's a great season for many citrus fruits that are unique to Japan. http://foodslink.jp/syokuzaihyakka/syun/monthly/mai-fr.htm
