As I understand, asylum seekers are given Designated Activities status, which is a bit special. Basically, the permitted activities are decided on a case by case basis, so if in doubt you should contact immigration.
You can of course always apply for a change of status, then your application is processed on its merits exactly as if you currently were on some other status.
