Any help for an Exchange Student in Tokyo? 2016/9/6 16:21
I stay in Tokyo for 5 months as an exchange student this semestr, I have already paid 159,000 yen for two months of staying. (Deposit and fees included, single room with fridge and air conditioner)

My school is Waseda University, and they couldn't give me one of their dorms so I had to rent a private one quickly. and I am desperately looking for a cheap dorm near Waseda. (If you know any, please, please let me know.)

I am also desperately looking for any way to eat, drink, shop, transport cheaply or the cheapest ways possible. (Survival hacks for studenst in tokyo)

Can someone gives me a few hacks, suggestions etc. in order for me to survive this semestr?

I know I should cook myself and transport as little as possible,
Do you know special places near fujimidai or waseda to buy groceries?
cheap places to buy secondhand bicycles?

any cheap thing ever?

Last question: I dont know any Japanese but I want to work? What should I do? Where should I go?
It seem I can only be an escort haha (desperate laugh)

Thank you for your help,

best

Have you been given permission to work? It's possible to work while on a student visa, but you need to apply for permission to do so.

Can your school student services help? There should be some adviser there for international students. Did you already pay that money to the school, but they couldn't give you a dorm? If so they should help you.

Sakura House is well known for short term housing, I don't know how close any of their branches are to you.

Hi, for part-time jobs you can find free featured magazines at convenience stores.

I'm kind of in the same spot right there - also an exchange student in Waseda this year :D
My place is in Shiinamachi and I'm paying 85 000 yen/month and it's a nice clean place although kind of in an inconvenient place for commuting to Waseda - have to change three lines.
I would say for housegoods and stuff - shop at Daiso and other 100yen shops.
For food go to the station's food courts - they usually have nice supermarkets there. And try not to shop from combinis - go for supermarkets - like take a stroll around your neighborhood and you'll find one for sure.
For the bike thing - I was recommended this place : ダイジャリン池袋店 but I haven't checked it yet.
If you live a bit further from Waseda - probably best to apply for a student commuter pass - you pay quite a bit and it's only for one particular route but it will save you quite a bit in the future.
Also for convenience - get a Pasmo or Suica cards - will be using the rail system lots for sure so it can be convenient and if you don't use up all of the money you put in them you'll get it back together with your deposit of 500yen when you return the card.

OK I think that's all that I have figured out in the past few days that I have been living in Tokyo :D

Sorry forgot to talk about part time jobs.
So Waseda should have send you an application for that - you have to fill it in and hand it at the airport or (I think) the municipality. It's not much and it doesn't take much time so don't forget to do it.
once you've done that I think you can look for a part time job at any time.
You can't work in the adult entertainment industry tho - like you can't be a host/hostess or anything like that :D
If you don't speak Japanese - go for English tutor or something like that :) Not sure how to apply for those but on the orientation in Waseda you can ask :)
Hope that was helpful!

As said shop at supermarket. Always check supermarket phamplet for daily saver or time period sale. Also go look for bentos or perishable daily food near closing hour, 1-2 hours before, for discount up to 70% off.

As for accommodation, cheaper solution will be guesthouses or share-house, dorm type will be cheaper compare to privateroom.
