Where to stay just outside Takayama?

We will be visiting the 14-15 April Festival - but hotels in Takayama are too expensive. We will have a railpass but Kanazawa as an example is too far. Any idea where we could stay within easy reach of Takayama but not breaking the bank? Thank you!
