Renewing passport before getting COE?

Hi, I'm a student entering a Japanese university next spring. I applied for my COE a while ago, and the admissions office said I should be getting it sometime in January.
However, I'm planning on renewing my passport soon (it only has 3~4 pages left, and I travel quite a lot). Would applying for a passport renewal affect my COE (and subsequently, my student visa) in any way? Should I just wait until I get to Japan and apply for a new passport then?

Ask the embassy where you plan to apply for your visa.
