How much I have to know japanese in Japan?

I'm starting japanese learning but I think that I can't learn it enough in half year (I'm going to Japan in next summer)..
Do I survive with english or will I be on trouble? I'm going to Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka.

I know less than 50 Japanese words, and managed my many travels in Japan with minimum "hiccups". Obviously, the more you know the better.
