I am a graduate student in Japan scheduled to graduate this September. I am currently planning to apply for a status that allows me to look for job. My question is that if I am able to change my status to looking for a job, will I be able to return to my country and re-enter Japan?

Isn't that the "specified activities" status for something like up to six months, to allow you to "continue to stay" in Japan after the Student status expires, so that you can continue the job-hunting activities beyond graduation? Then I am not sure, so please check with immigration.
