Hi all, I will be going to Japan in this Nov.
9-12 in Osaka 12-15 in Kyoto 15 midnight train to Hakone 16-17 in Hakone 17-21 in Tokyo.
This is my plan for this trip. I first time to Japan. They have too many types of passes. I'm struggling what type of passes to buy/use in Osaka, Kyoto. Your advice is much appreciate. :D

The truth is it takes a lot of riding to make the Kansai area passes pay off. And for just going between Osaka and Kyoto, you'd probably do better overall just buying regular tickets. If you really have your heart set on some pass, you might look at the Hankyu tourist pass. https://www.kansai360.net/en/ticket/But it also depends on where in Kyoto you plan to go. Within Osaka, the Osaka Amazing Pass might help you, if you're going to the places it gives little discounts to. In Kyoto, there is a 500 yen bus pass, but things can move at a crawl in rush hour. For Hakone, go to Odawara Stn and get a Hakone Free Pass. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2358_008.htmlThe loop course is a good way to see the area. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5210.html

you can catch Midnight train from Osaka to Odawara station, where you purchase the Hakone pass.

Not directly; you need a transfer for example at Atami.

LTD. EXP SUNRISE SETO night train is an experience you might not want to miss. Shower is available in the train and The Nobi Nobi seat is free for JR pass holder.

Looking back at the original question, however, a JR Pass will nit make sense since the itinerary basically a one-way Osaka-Tokyo...

Ya, I am not going to buy JR pass. So can I still take the midnight train? My friend say the midnight bus only can purchase in and collect in japan. Any idea about this?

Oh ya, this is the only way I can do. But it takes a risk. Haha. If really no choice this is only what I can do.
