Ishigaki / Irimote / Okinawa in May?

Hi there,
I was looking at the possibility of rainy season in Japan and apparently it is expected to hit Okinawa area as early as May 8th staying until late June.
As I am visiting Japan in May I was thinking of taking a visit to Okinawa and/or Ishigaki for a few days as I was inspired by watching a recent nature documentary on Animal Planet. There were direct flights to Ishigaki from Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya and sometimes Fukuoka by ANA so I was thinkig of using an "Air Pass".
I hear in summer it gets really warm and muggy. I wanted to travel to Japan in may as to avoid the other rainy seasons and the domestic travel seems to be low.
