Overnight stay near Mt. Fuji 2017/12/22 19:55
Dear all,

as we travel from Kyoto to Tokyo next year during the Golden Week, we would like to interrupt our Shinkansen ride and stay one night in a Ryokan near Mt. Fuji (ideally with a mountain view). Yes, it might not be the best idea to do this during the Golden Week but we had no other possibility. We would arrive on May 1st and continue our trip to Tokyo on May 2nd. The focus would be on authenticity, tranquility and nice food (and an English website to book the stay :-) Is there any place you would recommend?

Best regards
Peter

By around what time in the day (= May 2) do you plan to reach Tokyo?
How many travelers will you be?
Will there be a kid?

Well, weather permitting, presumably the quickest way for you to see Mount Fuji is to get off your Shinkansen Kodama train at Shin-Fuji Station (in Shizuoka Prefecture) and look around; this station is closest among the Shinkansen stations.

For lodgement near Mount Fuji, you can travel to Hakone (in Kanagawa Prefecture) via Odawara Station(s), where you make a transfer, via a pathway outside the gates, to Hakone Tozan Railway.

Or, when you leave Kyoto in the early morning, you might hope to stop by Atami (in Shizuoka Prefecture) then travel by bus (for about 40 minutes) and cable car (for a few minutes) to Jikkoku [Jukkoku] Ridge, which is known for Mount Fuji views.
From the foot of the ridge, you can go further by bus to Hakone, arriving at the south side of Lake Ashinoko.
(A possible demerit is that buses are only infrequently available on this line.)

Shinkansen Nozomi and Hikari trains skip Shin-Fuji Station; you can change at Nagoya Station to a Kodama train.
Nozomi trains and most Hikari trains skip Atami and Odawara Stations; when you take a Nozomi train from Kyoto, you can change at Nagoya Station.

JR companies may revise in March their time tables for major sections.
Now it is too early to expect which Shinkansen trains you would take in May.

The focus would be on authenticity, tranquility and nice food (and an English website to book the stay :-)

Hmm..., both Atami and Hakone may be crowded during the Golden Week; it might be difficult to meet your "tranquility" requirement.

What could be nice food depends on persons; information about your preferences may lead to useful advices.

That would be difficult. Truly authentic ryokans should be located along Tokaido. In May, it could be hazy. But the view could be better near the mountain. Mt Fuji erupted in Edo era. There should be no authentic ryokans left nearby.

If you are not set on ryokan, I highly recommend this air b n b:

Price was extremely reasonable, host was extremely helpful. The home is a new build and extremely well appointed. View of Mt. Fuji from home. You can walk to the home in just a few minutes from the bus stop. I will stay here again on next trip to Fuji.

You can walk to the home in just a few minutes from the bus stop.

This house seems located in Fujiyoshida City in Yamanashi Prefecture, quite off the Tokaido Shinkansen; it sounds too far for you to visit as a side trip on your way from Kyoto to Tokyo.

I will stay here again on next trip to Fuji.

Until the 14th of June 2018, it is against the law of Japan to manage a lodgement business at a private residence, except when the manager is given a license by the prefectural governor (under Inns and Hotels Act) , in most areas including those around Mount Fuji.

I am not sure about the host in this Fujiyoshida case; there is nothing on his (Airbnb) page to mention his legal license, so I can say that his lodgement business at this house may be discontinued.

The Fuji Five Lakes area is one of the most popular destinations between Kyoto and Tokyo. There is a direct overnight bus from Kyoto, however, most people use a Shinkansen train to Mishima. From there, there is a direct bus to Lake Yamanaka and Lake Kawaguchi. From Yamanakako, there is a direct bus only to JR Tokyo. Yamanakako would be quieter than Kawaguchiko. There are many choices from Kawaguchiko to various sites in Tokyo.

Hoto is one of the specialties in Yamanashi Prefecture. Don't miss it.

Correction. Some of the Shinjuku buses go directly to Yamanakako, too.

Please note that the above-featured private house is located not near Kawaguchiko Station.

You can make a day trip from Tokyo to Lake Kawaguchiko mostly by railway.

Personally I suggest you don't rely only on highway bus for long-distance transportation during the Golden Week; the road traffic may well be highly congested between some popular tourist sites near Mount Fuji and Tokyo's urban areas.

Thanks you very much for your kind and detailed answers!
We left our son at home so will be traveling just the two of us and expect to be in Tokyo after lunch on May 2nd and are flexible when it comes to leaving Kyoto on May 1st. Well, sure - tranquility is relative during Golden Week.
