Do dentists still use mercury in amalgam 2018/2/24 16:35
Hi.

My Japanese wife has a long list of medical problems. She also has more fillings than teeth. She has just come back from the dentist with even more metal.

I am wondering if I can rule out mercury as the cause of her chronic illness . In my native Australia we still use the term amalgam however mercury is no longer used.

Does anyone know the case in Japan?

Thanks, Richard

Dentists in Japan can use mercury amalgam since it can still be found in the mouths of older patients and foreigners, particularly in foreign patients from the USA. (As you may know, in the USA mercury fillings are still common since the American Dental Association's position is that mercury in amalgam is safe.)

These days Japanese dentists train using other materials, such as composite resin. Metal inlays, onlays and crowns are also used in Japan. If your wife had new dental work done in Japan, it probably was NOT done with mercury amalgam. However, if you are concerned, you should check directly with the dentist to find out.

On the other hand, if your wife had old mercury fillings from before and the dentist recently disturbed those, she could have been exposed to some mercury vapor recently.

You can also ask for a copy of her dental record, although you may not be able to interpret the symbols without the aid of a dentist or dental hygienist.

Has your wife been tested for mercury exposure (to determine if that is the cause of her chronic problems)? A blood and urine test can determine exposure to methyl and metallic mercury.

If you want to get to the bottom of this, you ought to get a referral to a specialist at a medical university. Also, it would be helpful for you to gather written information, especially your wife's complete medical/dental history and her family's medical history, to present to the specialist.

For your wife to get a referral, she could start by contacting a sympathetic doctor from among those who have treated her for her long list of medical problems. However, some doctors can quickly become defensive and very unhelpful if they think you are questioning their expertise or diagnosis, so definitely seek out a sympathetic doctor from among her caregivers.

Often, getting a correct diagnosis takes considerable time and persistence, and involves more than one specialist.

It may not be mercury. Now a days dentist dont use mercury as per my knowledge. Some people may have allergy of metal. Her various problem may have some root. You need to find out the root cause.
Please read about the situation of current dentistry in Japan.

About oral care, dentistry is not the final solution. Dentistry in Japan is not holistic. Unfortunately, dentist will not tell you natural remedies even they know. Most of the famous doctors in the world says that food is main builder of your teeth and gums. Some people think that eating sweets and then brushing the teeth is enough. that`s wrong. Only cleaning and flossing is not enough. Even I have dental silver feelings in some teeth. I could improve my oral health with proper diet(Vitamin D and K). Last time, dentist told me to remove the dead nerve. I tried all natural ways, and no dead nerve was found. Please check vitamin D test. Lack of vitamin D and poor calcium absorption result in the dental problems. This is what I know and I share my knowledge with you.

Holistic medicine is not scientifically proven. Please do not advocate going against a trained medical professional's advice.
