Interesting place around Tokyo 2018/3/1 16:56
Hi,

We love to travel to Japan but I am a little stuck in making itinerary for our next visit in July.
I know that my question is a little vague but can anyone advise interesting places children friendly (not usual tourist area and not theme park) around Tokyo (or covered by Tokyo wide pass).

Thank you in advance.

Start with browsing through this page and also similar pages on provinces around Tokyo, such as Ibaraki, Chiba, Saitama...

Any special age group you kids are in? Any interests they have? How heat resistant are they? (Itfs going to be hot and humid in July).

There are a few railway museums in the Tokyo area. Omiya (Saitama Pref.) has the Railway Museum. Tokyo Subway has one near Kasai Station on the Tozai Line. Tobu Railway has one under Higashi Mukojima Station on the Tobu Isesaki Line.

Does your child have a favorite among those "usual place" you visited? How about taking a local bus ride like this one?

Here are some details in English.

Or have you been to suburban towns like Kichijoji?

Does your child like crafts? There are tons of traditional craft experiences in the Tokyo Area. My daughter loves crafts.

and here are some more:

We've not yet done any craft experiences but are planning to mix in some for our next trip.

Have you thought about hiking? It looks like Chichibu might have some interesting hikes and possibly cooler temperatures: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6550.html

We've not been, but Karuizawa has bike riding, cooler temperatures and also some craft activities. We were looking at gel candle making.

Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestions.
Unlike many of child in his age my son really hate theme park so although I want to go to disneyland, disneysea, etc, it will be waste of money as he will not enjoy it.
I already add ueno natural museum, several zoo, and aquarium that he like and now searching for idea for other place to visit.

I can understand about flying around the world to just go to another American theme park. Still there are a couple of places near Nikko - have you looked at Edo Wonderland?

You can call it a theme park - but nothing your kid has ever dreamed of.
There is also the Tobu World Square
https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3878.html
and the Kinugawa River Cruise:

There are a number of cultural activities in Tokyo as well:

Hiking in Chichibu was mentioned - there is also some other good places like Takao, Okutama, and in Chiba, Nokogiriyama.
Both Hakone and the Fuji 5 Lakes area have a lot of different places and activities - there must be something in them he would enjoy.
Plus depending on the time you might look for some O-Bon activities, or some festivals, like on:

It's a unique way to observe and participate in traditional Japan.

Hari,

Thank you for your feedback. Thinking along the lines of your examples, I remember my Japanese son always enjoyed modern art exhibitions in Tokyo at that age. I don't know when you're coming, but this is one example of a big museum.

And if you ever feel like traveling up north and booking a shuttle bus departing from the Shinkansen station, your son might love Doubutsu Oukoku which means "animal kingdom" in Japanese. My son always used to and still goes crazy at the sheep meadow.

Also, if you enjoy nature in general, the Institute for Nature Study is a hidden gem right in the center of Tokyo.

It's also very close to the Teien Art Museum which is popular for its cozy garden and art deco building.

I hope you have fun!

Does your child like baseball? It's quite a different experience to watch a game in Japan!
