Kurobe Gorge in a day trip from Tokyo? 2018/3/5 18:13
Hello everyone,

1. Is it possible to make a daytrip from Tokyo to Kurobe Gorge and go back to Tokyo for the night?
2. Is Kurobe Gorge site open on the last week of March and the First week of April?
3. How far away is Kurobe Gorge from Jigokudani?

Thank you!

Yeah it is doable. But personally not advisable. 2.5-3.0 hours each way to the base station.

All other questions can be answered visiting the Kurobe Railway website.

Return trip from Tokyo would take about 6 hours.
The Unazuki -- Keyakidaira train trip, return, will take you almost 3 hours.
Daytrip might not be a good idea.

For that plan, I'd suggest staying in Nagano Prefecture at least one night. If you did that, Matsumoto would make a good base. There are convenient accommodations at various price points, such as Matsumoto Backpackers right near the train station; Dormy Inn, also near the station; and so on up the price scale.

Toyama to Matsumoto is the same travel time as Toyama to Tokyo. So that would probably be more effort than it is worth.
