Itinerary Japanese alps 2018/4/1 10:40
We are going to Japan for in Sep/Oct. This will be our second trip and we really want to see the Japanese Alps. The proposed itinerary is :
Tokyo 3 nights
Nagano 2 nights- day trip Alpine rote
Kanazawa 2 nights
Takyayma 2 or 3 nights
Matsumoto 2 nights
Mount Fuji 2 nights
Hakone 2 nights
Tokyo 2 nights
Can you please advise is this too busy as where possible I would prefer not to move around too much . Also is the direction we are looking at doing the most direct route ?
Many thanks

It looks fairly easy pace. I would recommend a night in Kamikochi in between of Takyayma and Matsumoto.

Thank you for your response. Much appreciated. Given this itinerary is it worth buying a JR pass ?

Great itinerary!

You're not going a great distance and your going at a very nice, leisurely pace. You'd have to price out the tickets on a site like Eki-net and see, but I have a feeling the railpass wouldn't save you much.

As for the JR pass, it is valid only on JR trains.

Tokyo 3 nights

You can use JR trains in Tokyo but it should be less than 1000 yen/day. 3000 yen

Nagano 2 nights- day trip Alpine rote

From Tokyo to Nagano you take Shinkansen (JR train). 8400 yen
I think you might better go through the Alpine route and stay on the route (such as Murodo). In any case, JR pass is not valid for the Alpine route.0 yen

Kanazawa 2 nights

From Toyama to Kanazawa you might use Shinkansen which is faster than the non-JR option. 2810 yen, non-reserved seat

Takyayma 2 or 3 nights
Matsumoto 2 nights

From Kanazawa to Takayama and then Matsumoto, the most convenient route is not JR but bus, so you will not use JR. 0 yen

Mount Fuji 2 nights

From Matsumoto to Mt Fuji (I think is should be around Kawaguchiko), you might take JR train from Matsumoto to Kofu. 4490 yen

Hakone 2 nights
Tokyo 2 nights

From Kawaguchiko to Hakone, JR is not useful. From Hakone to Tokyo, you can use it but there is also a cheap Odakyu trains.0 yen

Therefore the total JR fare is 3000+8400+2810+4490=18700 yen which is much cheaper than 29110 yen (7 day JR pass). Further actually the 7 day pass does not cover your itinerary. You may better buy individual JR tickets (plus some bus tickets as well).

These tickets might be useful.

Thank you so much for your reply.
Oh mentioned that it may be better to go through the Alpine route and stay on route such as Murodo. Can you please explain what you mean via this ?

In the original post you wrote "Nagano 2 nights- day trip Alpine rote".
If you mean Nagano to somewhere on the Alpine route, you must take
the same route twice (return trip). I think you might better do the one way
trip, from Nagano side to Toyama side. Please see their official page.

https://www.alpen-route.com/en/about/introduction.html

The route is rather long and the fare is rather expensive so I recommended
relatively cheap "Option ticket".

Among the route, Murodo is the highest point and on September/October,
you can hike there (or somewhat lower Midagahara). If you stay there, you
can enjoy the mountain scenery in the evening and morning. There are some
hotels/huts around there and you can choose according to your budget.

Of course you can "day trip", but even in this case you might better go
through to Toyama side, since it will save your time and money. In this
case, you should go through to Tateyama or Toyama or Kanazawa.
