Places to stay to explore Hokkaido

Dear All
My wife and me are going to visit Hokkaido this summer from End of July to August for about two weeks. As we have heard it will be major travel season there and booking in advance is recommended. Has anyone a recommendation, which places will make a good base to explore the island? We will pick up a rental car in Hakodate and have 8nights to spend. After that we have allready planned 3 nights in Sapporo.
Does anyone have a recommendation which places we could stay? We guess it would be difficult to plan all the stops night by night on an exact route, so maybe 3 to 4 places each with 2-3 nights? Any ideas?
