How can I tell if MT. Aso is accessible? We will be going in late July. What is the best way to get there from Miyajima? Will I need a car? Thank you.

How can I tell if MT. Aso is accessible? The lower areas are always accessible. The area around the crater gets closed if gases are too strong or the weather is bad. The current status of the crater area can be checked here: http://www.aso.ne.jp/~volcano/info/What is the best way to get there from Miyajima?Take the train to Fukuoka (Hakata Station) and the follow the instructions on the link below: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4551.html?aFROM=2161_4550Will I need a car?No, it is possible to visit by public transportation. However, a car can provide you with flexibility and comfort. The basics are explained in the "Orientation" section of the above-linked page.

The Kyusanko link is more for the status of the ropeway, not the actual conditions around the crater. The aso.ne.jp link will give you more pertinent info.

Can you provide links for buses that run from Kumamoto to Mt. Aso? Thank you for all the replies.
